James Allsopp

"...Multi-award winning Saxophonist at the cutting edge of modern jazz."

James Allsopp was born on the 4th of June 1981 into a house filled with the sounds of Pres, Bean, the Rabbit and many other wonderful musicians with frankly disturbing nicknames.

James grew impatiently until he was given his first saxphone at the age of eight. A reclusive child he then practiced it obsessively until his release from boarding school to go to the Royal Academy of Music on an entrance scolarship.

Since then he has won a Perrier Jazz Award and played extensively in the UK and toured Europe with leading musicians including The Brian Irvine Ensemble, Polar Bear, David Axelrod, Joe Morris, The F-IRE collective Big Band, Richard Fairhurst, Dylan Bates, Stan Sultzmann and Graham Collier amongst others. In May 2006 he performed the world premiere of “Shore”, by composer Dave Meric - a piece for dancers, saxophone and choir.

"...On July 22nd Fraud won the Jazz on 3 Innovation Award at the BBC Jazz Awards 2008."

In 2006 his own ensemble “Fraud”, which he co-leads with drummer Tim Giles, performed at the Cheltenham Jazz Festival as part of the Jerwood Rising Stars programme. They were also broadcast live from the festival on BBC Radio 3’s Jazz on 3 programme. “Fraud” recieved the Best Newcomer Award at the Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Awards 2007, their debut album “Fraud” was nominated for for BBC Jazz Award for Best Album of 2007 and James Allsopp was nomintated for the BBC Jazz Award for Rising Star 2007.
